We are still in the transition time with moving from the previous old Google Groups to this new tool. I thought I write you few tips that can help you to feel at home here.
As you probably could already notice, this new user group engine is more like a forum than typical mailing list. Nevertheless, similarly to the mailing list, it provides advanced notifications by e-mail for new post and replies. The important thing is to set up the notifications and adapt them to our needs.
All posts are marked by tags. The tags are like post categories that we can filter by the colorful buttons on the left side of the interface. Currently we have five tags available: General, Announcements, Issues, Ideas, Polls. If there will be needed, we can add more tags. We will see.
To be notified about new messages you can follow on single posts or all posts marked by given tag. For example, to be notified about all messages with the General tag, you need to click at the purple General label on the left and then click at the Follow button as on the image below.
Just after you will be able to choose subscribing all messages by choosing the Lurking option as below.
Also in the account settings page we can see various notification options as here:
